It came as weather experts warned that a real tropical depression posed a potential threat to Bermuda.

Police are warning residents that a hurricane is on its way, due to brush past the Island on Thursday.

But the warning is a make-believe one, part of a Hurricane Awareness Week exercise to get people prepared for hurricane season.

Police are pretending the first tropical storm of the season is on its way to Bermuda, and will pass within 124 miles on Thursday.

The real tropical depression -- the first of the season -- is expected at the same time. It may also bring much-needed rain tomorrow.

Although they are only carrying out an exercise, Police say the weather has already confirmed the need to be on guard.

Every day this week, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., test broadcasts will be made on the emergency station 100.1 megahertz, on the FM band.

Police are asking residents to tune in to test their radio and their batteries.

Householders are also being asked to check the following safety measures: Are trees and hedges cut back away from power lines? Are your shutters and their latches in good condition?
