Police plan Hallowe'en crackdown
pranks.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Vic Richmond said the period was a worry for the community, but violent criminals should expect no breaks from Police.
He said: "Hallowe'en has been a cause of concern in the past several years with people committing senseless acts of wilful and wanton damage.'' Mr. Richmond said he was baffled about why there was such an outbreak of crime over Hallowe'en.
He said: "It just seems to be an excuse. But I don't think they should ban it like Guy Fawkes night. It's for the children to enjoy.
"But for many it is a time of fear, including the elderly and those living alone.'' He said patrols would be increased throughout the weekend although he denied there was any need to be heavy-handed.
He said despite a decrease in criminal activity and unruly behaviour last year, Police needed to keep a firm grip.
Mr. Richmond also warned people not to try using Hallowe'en masks to disguise themselves during criminal activities.
He said: "If we feel anyone is using a mask to conceal their identity we will stop and demand their ID.'' Those arrested can also expect to stay in the Police cells until Monday as they were unlikely to get bail, said Mr. Richmond.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Gertrude Barker said the Service would be on hand to see buses through potential trouble areas.
Last year there were several incidents including school children on buses throwing eggs and swearing while two years ago a Police vehicle was attacked.
However, she added: "In the last two years we placed Policemen on buses, but we don't intend to do that this year.'' She explained that because Hallowe'en was on a Sunday, there was less chance of problems from groups of high-spirited school kids.
It still was not clear last night what time the buses would be running until during the weekend.
A Public Transportation Board spokesman said: "We are still discussing the issue with our union and we have not come to any conclusion.'' He said PTB would be putting out a statement today or tomorrow.
