Incinerator demand doubles in five years
The Tynes Bay Incinerator may have to be expanded to cope with rising demand says Minister of Works and Engineering Alex Scott.
He urged Bermudians to recycle more to reduce demand for waste disposal which is already twice what was expected when the facility was built in 1994.
Speaking at the fifth anniversary celebration, Mr. Scott said the $60 million incinerator also played a part in reusing waste.
Ash producd from combustion is mixed with Portland cement to make ash block used for land reclamation at the Airport -- leading to the creation of three and a half acres of land have been created over the past five years.
"The second by-product is steam. The steam is fed into a steam turbine and electricity is produced and distributed into the Belco grid.
"Over the last three years Works and Engineering has received from Belco approximately $4 million for electricity exported from Tynes Bay.''
