A Bermudian has been appointed to head up the local office of leading global investment banker Nomura Securities.
James A. Hollis Hallett , 38, has been confirmed as president of Nomura Securities (Bermuda) Ltd. and joined the firm this month, replacing Lawrence DellaRatta who was reassigned back to the New York office.
During Mr. Hallett's 17 years with the Bank of Bermuda, he helped establish the bank's global custody product and most recently saw to the management of the division worldwide as director of the bank's operational risk management.
He held a broad-based series of positions in areas including corporate trust, global custody management and marketing, as well as investment management.
Mr. Hallet said yesterday, "I was on the securities administration side of the business at the Bank of Bermuda, involved in the global custody area.
"This is a very attractive opportunity from Nomura Securities to look at the other side of the business, which is the actual trading and securities transactions and brokerage side of the business.'' The firm said in a prepared statement, "This appointment clearly follows our philosophy that local management is the most effective and appropriate. Mr.
Hallet is a well known and respected member of the Bermuda business community and we are delighted to have a senior executive with his skills join us.'' Mr. DellaRatta headed the office since it opened last year May.
Nomura in Bermuda is a member of the Bermuda Stock Exchange and engages in three sectors of business: emerging markets, equity derivative trading and financing transactions.
Employing a staff of seven at Richmond House on Par-La-Ville Road, the company comes under Nomura Holdings America Ltd., a subsidiary of Nomura Securities of Tokyo.
*** Betty Brown has been appointed as the general manager of deposit company Bermuda Savings and Loan Ltd. Ms Brown was previously general manager of rival Somers Mortgage and Finance.
She replaces Campbell McBeath who was general manager for about ten years and is now moving to the treasury section of Overseas Partners Ltd. Ms Brown was with Somers for the past 28 years before Bermuda Commercial Bank decided exit the deposit company market and discontinued its operations.
Bermuda Savings is majority owned by First Bermuda Securities Ltd. Argus Insurance Co. Ltd. owns the other 47 percent.
Bermuda Savings is the smallest of the four deposit companies on the Island and has a staff of three.
Peter Howells, who also worked at Somers, has been appointed as assistant manager of Bermuda Savings.
