And Minister of Delegated Affairs, the Hon. Sir John Sharpe said the new constables would find it an exciting time to enter the force as a result of the Tumim Report on the criminal justice system.

Sir John said: "The report asks for better relations between the Police and the public and it recommended new procedures which need to be learned.

"As young, bright people they are well equipped to face these challenges. At times they will need to be as strong as Sampson and at others as wise as Solomon.'' The Minister was speaking at the passing out parade of the young people, who have just completed a 16-week training course. Half of them went through cadet training and the others were recruited as mature individuals.

Sir John said that in his 30 years of Parliamentary service nothing gave him greater pleasure than to welcome young Bermudians to serve their country as a Police officer.

"They are fortunate to join the Police service since it is a good career with good terms and conditions of employment,'' he said.

"But the service is also fortunate to gain a quality of young people who, notwithstanding that jobs are harder to come by today, could find alternative and more social and agreeable employment in the private sector.''
