Athletes in final Derby warm-up

five-mile road race in Warwick or the Sprint Triathlon in St. David's as a final tune-up for the May 24 Marathon Derby.

Among those confirmed for the Bermuda Regiment Run are Brett Forgesson, Jeremy Ball, Jamal Hart and Harry Pachett.

While among those looking to sharpen up with a more competitive challenge -- the Hamilton Ice Queen National Sprint Triathlon Championships at Clearwater Beach -- are Neil de Ste Croix, Kevin Tucker and Julia Hawley.

Forgesson was the winner of last year's breakfast run with a time of 27 minutes, 24 seconds, beating David Dunwoody (28.05) into second place. Hart was third in 28.38 followed by Pachett (29.20) and Ball (30.03).

A total of 70 runners took part last year and race officials yesterday said that they expected close to that number again.

The race starts at Warwick Camp's rear entrance at 9.00 a.m., taking the runners on to Spice Hill Road and to Camp Hill, down to Middle Road. They will then go west to Barnes Corner, turn onto South Shore Road and return to the finish line at Warwick Camp's main gate.

The triathlon will see participants swim 750 metres, cycle 20 kilometres and run 5K.

De Ste Croix will be looking to retain his title but is expected to receive a strong challenge from Tucker, who finished just 40 seconds behind him last year, as well as winner of the recent Tri-Gatorade Kris Hedges and runner-up in that event Greg Hopkins.

Also tipped for a good finish are Kent Richardson, who has been busy in similar events overseas, and Steve Doyling.

Hawley and Shona Palmer are expected to be the top finishers in the women's division.
