Wright gets her Olympic chance
year after she was yesterday granted a wildcard entry.
The news that Wright had been invited to compete in the Europe class in Sydney was confirmed by the Bermuda Sailing Association yesterday.
Speaking from France, where she is competing in a regatta near the city of Marseille, Wright said she was delighted.
"I'm kind of thrilled,'' said Wright. "It's not really hit me just yet.'' Wright had a sacre when she looked at a list of Olympic entrants posted on the Internet by the International Sailing Federation this week with Bermuda's name absent.
"Bermuda's name was not on the list, but now we know they just made a mistake,'' said Wright. "The Bermuda Sailing Association have now been notified.'' Bermuda received one of four wildcards granted by the International Sailing Federation.
Wright is on the European regatta circuit at the moment. In Barcelona, Spain, she finished eighth out of a 19-boat fleet and then at the Princess Sophia regatta in Majorca last week she ended the series 24th out of 70.
She then made a rushed journey to southern France but has been unable to race so far because she is ill with a cold -- something she attributed to her hectic schedule.
Wright won a silver medal at the Pan Am Games in Winnipeg last year and narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Olympics with her performance at the Europe Dinghy World Championships in Salvador, Brazil in February.
