`Disgraceful' attack on US Consul shocks reception
US Consul General Bob Farmer has come under fire from controversial US conference organiser Bonnie Marshall -- at a special reception at the diplomat's luxury mansion.
And last night a furious Bermudian onlooker who witnessed Ms Marshall's shock attack on Mr. Farmer said: "It was disgraceful and disrespectful.
"Everyone was embarrassed and I think some of the Consulate staff were so disgusted they just walked out.'' Ms Marshall launched the shock attack on Mr. Farmer at a party at Chelston to honour delegates to the World Conference of Mayors, hosted by the US authorities on the Island.
She accused Mr. Farmer of not doing enough to help her in her attempts to organise the conference -- and claimed she had spoken to "people in Washington'' who would have him recalled from his post.
The outburst against Mr. Farmer stunned guests and US Consulate staff.
And Ms Marshall -- who could face US Federal Court charges for lying under oath during a civil case in Missouri -- also told reception guests that new Premier Jennifer Smith had called her to assure her she would get an official Government apology for the way she had been treated while on the Island.
Last night WCM director general Johnny Ford agreed Ms Marshall had lashed out at Mr. Farmer -- and said he would be writing to apologise.
But he insisted Ms Marshall's remarks were made on her own behalf and WCM delegates were as shocked as anyone else.
A US Consulate spokeswoman confirmed a reception for the World Conference of Mayors had taken place on Monday -- but declined to comment further.
Fed-up World Conference of Mayors are set to axe Ms Marshall and dump Mr. Ford as well.
The Bermudian party insider said: "Board members expressed displeasure with her and Johnny Ford and complained about the lack of organisation.'' Apparently some delegates are angry at only being told of travel plans the day before they were due to leave their home towns.
And the insider added: "They're planning to replace Mr. Ford as well, because, against their better judgement, he held out in favour of keeping Ms Marshall involved.'' The Chelston outburst is the latest in a series of embarrassments for the WCM laid at the door of Ms Marshall.
When first appointed to organise the conference last year, Ms Marshall promised a host of international celebrities along with 3000 delegates from all over the world.
But fewer than 100 turned up and a series of promised events and entertainers never materialised.
