Learn your heritage, says Sen. Swan
Cultural Affairs Minister Yvette Swan stressed yesterday.
Speaking to members of Hamilton Lions at their weekly luncheon at Pier Six nightclub, Sen. Swan said her Ministry had chosen, "A Tribute to Tourism'' as the theme for this year's celebrations.
She added that her Ministry felt that this month's focus on tourism will help everyone think about how they can contribute to "... an industry which is one of the important pillars of the economy of Bermuda...'' The Minister also told the group that this year's parade would be bigger and better than in previous years and that 52 groups, schools and organisations had applied to participate in the parade, including groups from overseas.
She said it was her hope people would "feel free'' to pass on knowledge of their heritage to their children, grandchildren and that schools would encourage students to learn more about Bermuda's history.
Sen. Swan also noted that last year the Indian community participated in the parade for the first time and that this year the Filipino community would join in for the first time.
"Ladies and gentlemen we should all remember that our heritage is made up of a delicate blend of people, customs, culture and traditions from all around the world,'' she added.
