Charities to receive tips on boosting skills
Three world-renowned management and leadership consultants will attempt to strengthen the skills charities need to succeed in the social sector.
The American advisors will lecture participants on these necessities during a seminar to be held on September 25.
The "Nonprofit Leader of the Future: A Seminar in Social Sector Leadership'' will be broadcasted via satellite from the Bermuda Biological Station and televised across the US.
Presented by the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, the seminar will aim to "lead social sector charities and organisations toward excellence in performance'' said executive vice-president of the Drucker Foundation and seminar producer Robb Johnston.
"The seminar has two main objectives,'' Mr. Johnston told The Royal Gazette yesterday. "One is to strengthen individual leadership skills and the second is to build the community around which the charity is helping.'' "An effective social sector with charities and organisations that provide goods and services that Government and businesses do not is critical,'' he said.
"And this is possible by strengthening the leadership skills of these organisations so they can become more effective.'' The "live, interactive'' seminar will provide insight into the specific characteristics vital in becoming an effective leader.
Participants will learn to successfully evaluate and effectively apply their mission statements as well as to identify the needs of staff members and volunteers.
These approaches will subsequently aid charity leaders and members to develop and improve their skills, said Mr. Johnston.
Opening the seminar, will be the "father of modern management'' Mr. Drucker who for 30 years has written and taught about the non-profit sector.
Mr. Drucker will be giving a speech entitled "Lessons in Leadership''in which he will examine and evaluate the tactics of five leaders.
Best-selling leadership author Max de Pree will be delivering a speech entitled "Identifying the Needs of Followers''.
Mr. de Pree will emphasise the importance of a leader's ability to recognise the needs of both staff members and volunteers.
And Frances Hesselbein, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Drucker Foundation, will focus on the significance of clearly defining mission statements during a session titled "Leading through Mission''.
The seminar is available to all executives, board members, volunteers and staff members of charitable organisations who wish to expand their leadership qualities.
