Cruise ship season '95 underway

liners on repositioning voyages: Sea Princess and Southern Cross . Two other occasional callers are expected next week as well as the arrival of the Island's first regular caller of the season, Chandris Celebrity Cruises' Meridian from Florida.

Meanwhile, Spanish rescuers have confirmed an overdue Cuban ship sailing from Havana to northern Spain, on behalf of which Harbour Radio had made urgent broadcasts, sank in the Atlantic on March 10 with the loss of all but one of the crew of 25.

Reuter news service reported rescue efforts were launched from Spain after the ship failed to arrive in Santander on March 16 as scheduled.

The spokesman said the surviving crew member was discovered in a life-raft last Sunday by the Liberian ship Dole Africa , 500 miles south of the Azores.

The search was continuing.

The freighter Guantanamo was carrying 3,700 metric tons of scrap when it sank.

The crew member said he had seen no other survivors.

Meyer Agencies reported the arrival of the CTC Cruise Line ship Southern Cross from Europe and the Azores yesterday afternoon. On the way to Port Canaveral, Florida, she berthed in Hamilton for the remainder of the day and carried 600 passengers.

In other shipping news, Meyer reported the arrival on Saturday of the US Navy supply ship Strong Cajun from the Azores. She called to collect two empty 40-foot containers from the US Naval Air Station's Marginal Wharf, sailing the next day for Norfolk, Virginia.

On Sunday, the Nassau-flagged Sea Trade Groningen Motor Vessel Goose Bay arrived from Port Canaveral and berthed at Penno's Wharf, St. George's to load a cargo of freon gas and pick up two technicians before heading to Flushing, Holland. She sailed on Monday.

The Bermuda Islander arrived on Monday a day ahead of schedule, carrying 84 containers, including 11 refrigerated containers and one piece of break-bulk cargo. She sailed the next day.

Harnett and Richardson represented the first cruise ship of the season, the Sea Princess which arrived in Dockyard on Sunday from Madeira on a world cruise and was on her way to Port Canaveral.

It will be the last time she comes to Bermuda as the Sea Princess . It was decided that she will be renamed Victoria .

Her first cruise under that name is April 27 after she emerges from a brief refit.

The change of name is being made to strengthen her relationship with P&O Cruises, about to launch the Oriana , and clearly differentiate her from the ships of its sister company Princess Cruises.

H&R also reported the arrival of the tall ship Astrid on Saturday. The private sail training brigantine carried a Bermudian among its 26-person crew. Mr.

Andrew Davidson, 19, was able to join through the Bermuda Astrid Trust fund.

The tall ship, berthed in Hamilton, is en route from the Caribbean to England and departs the Island on Wednesday.

Agents John S. Darrell expected only one caller this week, the Dutch-registered Haskerland , a 92-foot heavy-lift ship from Sweden which is bringing more heavy engines and equipment for the Bermuda Electric Light Company on Saturday. She is berthing in Hamilton.

Harbour Radio noted the visit yesterday by the Brigantine sailing ship Corwith Cramer , which has visited several times before. She is based with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Research Institute and was en route from Miami to the Caribbean. With 35 crew on board, she berthed at Penno's Wharf and is due to leave on Saturday.

Container Ship Management's Oleander arrived on schedule on Sunday carrying 169 containers, including 130 dry and 39 refrigerated, five cars, three mafis, and assorted equipment. She sailed on Tuesday.
