on the Island. And, of course, she found romance here as an eye-catching teenager.

But now blonde Andrea Sullivan faces a life cut off from her family, friends, and the Island she calls home.

For the 22-year-old former Miss Bermuda 1991 has been told she is not a Bermudian.

Sadly, she has fallen through a crack in Bermuda's strict immigration rules.

Miss Sullivan, now studying law near London, came to Bermuda with her British parents when she was eight.

But, to become a Bermudian, she said she needed to have been here before her sixth birthday.

The bureaucratic block has split her from her family.

Nineteen-year-old sister, Kirsty, who arrived here as a five-year-old, escapes the immigration ruling.

And her father, divorced from his first wife, has married a Bermudian and expects eventually to apply successfully for status.

Her mother, too, has also remarried a Bermudian, and could return.

To the young woman who hit the headlines here as a beauty queen the prospect of a life in anywhere but Bermuda is grim.

"Bermuda is my home, and I can't think about living elsewhere,'' she said yesterday.

Miss Sullivan, a Bermuda High School old girl, was aware of the immigration ruling before she applied for status.

And she stressed she completely understood the need for strict regulations.

There was, however, perhaps room for greater flexibility to take into account individual cases.

If her mother, father, and sister become Bermudians -- as seems almost certain -- she will be the only British member of her family.

"I'm not bitter, but I am disappointed and upset. That's understandable, of course.

"I was just hoping that my application would be successful. And, naturally, I'm still hoping one day I could return home.

"Bermuda is where all my friends are. It is where I was brought up, went to school, and where I feel comfortable.'' The former Bermuda College student, who made several televised appearances in the 1991 Miss Universe Beauty Pageant, says she feels completely out of place in England.

She is studying at Surrey's Reading University, and shares a flat with two Bermudians.

"I feel a foreigner in England. It is a different culture, although I don't have much time for a social life here because the work is hard.'' Miss Sullivan has at least two-and-a-half more years of study ahead of her in England, including a year at Bar School.

The outlook after that is uncertain.

If she can't return to Bermuda to launch her career, Miss Sullivan is stumped as to what she will do.

"I feel very frustrated,'' she said.

Andrea's father, Mr. Anthony Sullivan, sympathises with his elder daughter's frustration.

"I think she knew in theory what the immigration rules where, but that is different to knowing them in practice.

"I'm not making any criticism of the regulations, but they can be seen to be unfortunate for certain people.

"Andrea just happens to fall between the cracks of the differents sets of regulations.

"She is disappointed and frustrated, although she is not bitter. I think she has reacted philosophically.'' Mr. Sullivan says Andrea's predicament hit her this summer when she came over for a visit.

"She came out with a return ticket as a visitor has to. It was then she realised this was no longer her home.'' Mr. Sullivan said Andrea and Kirsty were very close sisters.

"I think Kirsty feels disappointed too about what has happened, although they are both at an age where they can accept it.'' Miss Andrea Sullivan.
