`Champions' Vasco aim to make sure
soccer season.
But Bermuda Football Association's failure to release decisions made regarding recently boycotted matches means that Vasco will now have to put the issue beyond doubt themselves with a victory over Devonshire Colts at White Hill Field tomorrow. "If we get a draw on Sunday it's over,'' said Vasco coach John Rebello who admits it has been difficult to motivate his players lately with so much going on with teams not playing in protest.
Vasco are still awaiting news on the outcome of their matches against Boulevard in the Friendship semi-final and the league which were not played on March 16 and 19.
It is assumed by many they will be awarded the points from the league game after Boulevard decided not to play in protest, which would confirm them as champions.
However, that decision has not been confirmed and the league standings published by The Royal Gazette (the BFA don't issue `official' standings) reflect that.
Rebello admits that winning their second straight championship will be anti-climatic because of all the chaos.
"This has taken the enjoyment out of it, it's knocked football out of everybody,'' Rebello stated yesterday.
"Guys are in the mode of just wanting to have fun and not take it serious.
It's a hindrance because we haven't played in a month and with all the commotion guys don't want to play anymore.
"Guys are just not motivated but what might help us is that we have 10 guys involved in the national programme so we count our blessings for that.'' Vasco won't be at their strongest with Kentoine Jennings, Dwight Basden and Ascento Russell doubtful because of injuries while some other players are abroad.
However, the motivating factor for Vasco will be trying to finish the league season unbeaten. Plus, they are still in the Friendship.. .the final or at least the semi-final.
"People say we don't deserve it (league title) but we have played 15 games and are undefeated,'' said Rebello.
"In the league we were consistent but in terms of the big cup games we didn't rise to the occasion as we did last year. We had experience last year but this year we relied a lot more on youth.'' Dandy Town, who trail Vasco by three points, close out their season tomorrow at home to Boulevard, with Town coach Mark Trott having already conceded the title to Vasco.
This will be the first trip back to St. John's Field for Boulevard since their FA Cup semi-final against Devonshire Colts was abandoned because of the bottle throwing incident involving Boulevard player Haile Outerbridge.
And although Outerbridge has since been banned for 25 years by the BFA, the governing body is yet to rule on the outcome of the match which Colts were leading 2-0 early in the second half.
It has taken the association longer to rule on that match than it did the Vasco-North Village semi-final a year ago when that game was abandoned late in the second half with Vasco leading.
Unless the boycotted match between Devonshire Cougars and Hamilton Parish is rescheduled, then Cougars will not be able to climb out of the bottom two and thus will be relegated along with Parish.
Tomorrow, Cougars meet Wolves at Devonshire Rec. in what could be their last game of the season. Wolves, whose match against Devonshire Colts last weekend was abandoned when an injury left them with just six players (the minimum for a match is seven), have capped a good season by winning a spot in the Martonmere Cup next season.
Three teams will battle for the two remaining Martonmere Cup spots, with Devonshire Colts, Somerset and Southampton Rangers all in contention. Somerset entertain Village at the west end while Rangers should be good for maximum points against Hamilton Parish.
The two promotion spots are now settled so the four matches in the Second Division will be of little importance other than PHC and St. George's meeting at Southampton Oval in what will be a preview of the Shield final next weekend.
In other matches Social Club take on Ireland Rangers at Bernard Park, Prospect host Paget at Police Field and Somerset Eagles entertain St. David's at White Hill Field.
