BFA pair want top post

Monday night when the Bermuda Football Association holds its annual general meeting at Social Club, starting at 6.00.

It is understood that two names have already been submitted for nomination to the high-profile position of president -- acting president Neville Tyrrell and director Aldwyn Savery.

The way has been paved for a smooth and trouble-free meeting following the decision last week by club affiliates to accept the Sharpe Commission recommendations for the association's constitution and by-laws.

It put an end to the tumultuous two-year period that began with the "Miami Seven'' drugs case and saw the development of a leadership crisis that eventually led to president Richard Thompson being forced to resign.

Now the focus is on who will be given the task of getting Bermuda soccer back on track.

In accordance with the recommendations of the Sharpe Commission, the entire BFA executive must resign to enable a new one to be elected. All the existing officers are eligible to run for re-election if nominated.

Both Tyrrell and Savery, who is also president of Southampton Rangers, confirmed that they would be contesting the position. But while Savery was travelling yesterday and unable to give a comment Tyrrell spoke with confidence about gaining the support of the affiliates.

"Having had the opportunity of being acting president for the last five months or so I feel that I fully understand the direction in which football should be going. I am getting positive signals from the affiliates, from the corporate sponsors, from the government ministry that has responsibility for sports in Bermuda and from the general public,'' said Tyrrell.

"I firmly believe that with the addition of some dedicated people, some of who already exist on the BFA combined with others we hope to bring on, that we can continue to work towards changing the face of football. I am quite optimistic.

"There is still some confidence to be restored as there remain some doubters out there, but in time I believe we can turn their thinking around as well.'' NEVILLE TYRRELL -- Wants to succeed Richard Thompson as BFA president.
