BCBC bank on Cullinan in build-up to next World Cup
The presence of top South African Test batsman Darryl Cullinan will help kick start Bermuda's quest for a berth in the next World Cup.
According to Bermuda Cricket Board of Control president El James, Cullinan will be involved in all aspects of coaching in a developmental programme which is aimed ultimately at qualifying Bermuda for the 2003 tournament.
"He will be here to work in all of our developmental areas, but we are really pleased that the ICC International Development Committee have supported a move which sees him assisting in our bid to qualify for the World Cup which is our ultimate goal at a senior level,'' said James.
"What's exciting is that Darryl has already got involved in helping to organise various programmes that the Board intend to run this summer. He will be supervising and assisting in our progress, including preparation of the youth and senior teams and the supervision of various summer clinics and camps.
"He will also be available to pass on tips to our coaches all of whom have been asked to come out and support the programmes and take advantage of Darryl's experience.'' With national coach Allan Douglas heading the overall programme, helped by staff coaches, James believes Cullinan will get the necessary co-operation needed in order to be successful, particularly with the younger players.
The timing of Cullinan's visit is crucial in that he will be able to assist in the preparation of both the senior and under-17 national squads for two international tournaments this summer. The seniors will be touring Canada from August 5-12 where they will meet Canada in Toronto while the juniors will be hosting Canada for a six-game tour from August 12-19.
And after the tour to Toronto the seniors will then have to prepare for their biggest challenge which is the prestigious Red Stripe Bowl scheduled for the Caribbean at a date still to be announced.
"It really is delightful to know that we can draw a quality person like Darryl here. He is obviously a highly rated international player who has been around a long time. He's played a lot of one day and Test cricket and he obviously has a lot to pass on to our players,'' said James.
"The ICC have recognised the need for such an individual over here and have assisted us at a timely period. I was in the UK last week, I met with the ICC developmental manager and as a result of the meetings they have seen fit to assist us which we truly appreciate.'' While the ICC recommended that Bermuda accept the South African for coaching, it was Cullinan who took the initiative by approaching the BCBC about the prospect of visiting.
