Runner Kavin keeps race rivals guessing
Could 1995 see the return of Kavin Smith to the road running scene? Is the talented runner ready to end his year-long, self-imposed exile? And why did he stop competing in the first place? As the road race season moves into full swing, such questions are being asked with Smith, regarded as Bermuda's top distance running talent, still on the sidelines... well, seemingly.
The 1993 Marathon Derby chamopion has been spotted recently making his way along the Island's roadways, his effortless, fluid style easily recognisable.
He ran unofficially during the Round the Town Race, appearing none the worse for his extended lay-off as he kept in touch with the leaders, barely breaking a sweat during five laps around the city.
After the race he immediately encouraged training partner Kevin Tucker into another workout and the pair set off for what Smith later said was a long training run.
Smith has hinted at making an appearance in this year's May 24 Marathon Derby.
So, is he indeed on the comeback trail? "That day I was just jogging and doing a long run,'' responded Smith, who seemed amused by the attention. "I'm just trying to get in shape.
"I never stop getting in shape. I don't necessarily like it all the time, but it's addictive...kind of like cigarettes.
"Still, I'm working hard right now to get my house straight. I'm building and doing everything myself and I don't have time. Plus Sunday's is when I do most of the work.'' Smith is in the process of renovating a home in the Bailey's Bay area, a job he started early last year, around the same time he disappeared from the local road running scene.
It was first rumoured that the runner had stopped competing because he was not pleased with the manner in which prizes were being distributed at events and the way the sport was being administered, all of which Smith has repeatedly denied.
He says that his house remains his first priority and until it is completed running will linger on the back-burner. He estimated full completion of the project within two years.
Asked if he might take part in the May 24 Derby, even if only for fun, Smith said he was undecided.
"I don't know. I'd have to start doing some serious training, like starting yesterday.
"That's just three months away and I have no time to get in race shape.'' Also in jeopardy is Smith's stated goal of taking part in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.
The runner had been training under the watchful eye of coach Duncan Newby with sights on the Games. But he has since ceased the work-outs.
"I don't know if I'll go. It all depends on my house and how far it's progressed.'' Kavin Smith
