Way sets up crunch meeting
all to see yesterday when he routed Britain's David Sullivan in straight sets to reach the final of the Coral Beach Club Invitational.
It took him less than an hour to set up a crunch meeting with Greg Frigerio as he swept past his opponent 6-1, 6-0.
Way said afterwards: "I just played well. I never let up so he was never allowed to get his game going.'' Way later enjoyed two doubles victories with partner Mike Curry: they defeated Eldon Daniels and Ray Knigh 6-3, 6-4, then ousted John Moore and Earl Leader, also in straight sets. The wins ensured Way and Frigerio would face each other across the net a second time today -- Frigerio and partner Alec Anderson, the second seeds, are also through to the doubles final.
Meanwhile, the first two titles of the tournament were decided when Earl Leader defeated his doubles partner John Moore 6-4, 6-2 to win the men's 45 competition and Gill Butterfield beat Julie Lunn 6-1, 6-1 to take the women's 40 crown.
Butterfield, however, fared less well in the women's doubles with her partner Gretchen Devlin. The top seeded pair had two match points against Americans Angela Stephens and Erika Hendricks but were finally edged out 3-6, 6-1, 5-7.
In what should be an action packed finals day today, five of seven matches will pit the top two seeds against one another.
YOU WIN SOME... -- Gill Butterfield had a mixed day at the Coral Beach Invitational tennis tournament yesterday.
