Gibbons still upset by Cup Match snub

Match team following a bitter, public dispute with the then club president, Noel Gibbons is still seething over his unceremonious dismissal.

The top Bermudian all-rounder was not included for the final trial match last year after an apparent failure to pay club dues and thus lost his spot in the annual Classic after 23 years of service.

A battle of words ensued between Gibbons and Clevie Foggo -- Foggo has since given up the post to Mansfield Smith -- with Gibbons claiming to have paid the required $50. Foggo insisted the reverse was true.

Gibbons was the ultimate loser, replaced in the line-up by Clevie Wade and having his streak of consecutive appearances ended at 23.

Last Sunday, as he watched the latter stages of the Premier Division match between Western Stars and Bailey's Bay, Gibbons reiterated his displeasure at being "pushed out the door''.

Asked whether he had any designs on returning to the midsummer spectacle Gibbons smiled before stating in no uncertain terms: "My account is definitely closed with St. George's and Cup Match.

"I gave them 23 years and I did not like the way they treated me and handled the situation last year and up until today I still haven't been able to swallow it.

"Maybe if there was a way I could play for Somerset I would, but I have no thoughts at all for St. George's.'' Gibbons stands eighth on the all-time run scoring (aggregate) list -- second among active players -- with 783 from 40 innings. He also claimed 33 wickets, coming at a average of 25.73.
