the 12th Atlantic Rally for Cruisers recently.

Skippered by Bermuda's Mark Soares, with an almost entirely Bermudian crew, the 48-foot Oyster was the first Island boat to take part in the 2,800-mile voyage from Grand Canary Islands to St. Lucia.

Forever Young , which was recently purchased by Bermuda's Brian Hall in the British Virgin Islands, arrived on December 12, completing the trip in 18 days, 21 hours, 24 minutes and 16 seconds.

But with a handful of the 152 boats who started having still not arrived in Rodney Bay, corrected times were not available.

Dolphin , a renamed 60-foot veteran of the Whitbread Round the World Race, took line honours with a time of 14 days and 14 hours. No Rehearsal , a 70-footer, was second and was the first Oyster to cross. Richard Searls and Malcolm Walker were the respective skippers.

No major incidents were reported, although the fleet were frustrated by light winds, officials said.

Soares' crew included Chloe McKey, Jonathan Saul -- son of former Premier David Saul -- his Canadian girlfriend Elyann Triggs, Mark Whayman and Wim van der Lugt, who grew up in Bermuda.

Soares is a former St. George's charter boat captain and it was in this capacity that Hall came to pick him to handle his new boat. "I've always been impressed with his seamanship,'' Hall said.

Soares is staying with Forver Young in the Caribbean until the spring. Hall hopes to be on board when the three-year-old cutter competes in the Newport to Bermuda Race next June.
