Village facing a fight for survival

Colts in tomorrow's lone Martonmere Cup Group B match at White Hill Field, starting at 3.00 p.m.

Having already suffered a 2-1 defeat against Dandy Town last Saturday night at BAA the pressure is on Village to win this one or face an early exit from the competition.

Just how much Devonshire Colts will be able to contribute to the demise of Village from the competition remains to be seen. Colts will be making their debut this season and mystery surrounds their strength after they lost quality players such as Mark Ray, Vic Ball and Keenan Burchall through transfers.

Unfortunately for Colts they have not been able to replenish their squad strongly although striker Alajame Zuill returns to them after a season with Cougars.

New coach David Furbert will be anxious to see what Colts have to offer in this opener, but their fans will be just as eager to see what the return of Furbert adds to the club after his one season sojourn with Hamilton Parish last season.

Village enter the game favourites based on their competitiveness against Dandy Town in a clash that could have gone either way.

Kaiwon Dill got their only goal midway through the second half as they fought hard to recover from a two-goal deficit.

Village coach Kenny Thompson will want his team to demonstrate the same kind of enterprising play that forward Kevin Jennings showed in the opener.

To make up for lapses in both attack and defence, Thompson was forced to turn to his bench and call on the services of regulars Elliott Jennings and Michael Hansey.

However, against less potent opponents this time around Village may not be forced to press the panic button and call for reinforcements. On paper they seem to have sufficient strength to overcome whatever Furbert and his Colts squad will be able to muster in this match
