Rematch confusion adds drama to finale
David's replayed, could just dash Cleveland's hopes of a first Camel Cup place.
They looked to have secured that place after last weekend's matches left them three points ahead of fifth-placed Devonshire Rec. with just one match remaining.
However, there has been talk of the Devonshire-St. David's match being replayed after St. David's bowler Dale Fox delivered 11 overs in helping his team to a narrow win. And while the BCBC met earlier this week to discuss the match nothing has been forthcoming to confirm if or when the match will be played.
As a result, Cleveland go into their final match of the season tomorrow against Western Stars needing a win to keep a gap between themselves and Rec.
just in case the Devonshire side have another match to play.
This match at St. John's field is the only match tomorrow of any real importance. And though Stars cannot now catch first-placed St. George's, there is still the runners-up spot at stake, which would mean avoiding St. George's in the Camel Cup semifinals early next season when first plays third and second meets fourth.
The other two teams in the top four, unbeaten champions St. George's and Bailey's Bay, both have easy matches to close out their season. St. George's, seeking win number 15, are at home to the team at the other end of the table, Warwick, while Bay take on third-from-bottom Social Club at Sea Breeze Oval.
There is an interesting match at the west end where Somerset Bridge entertain neighbours Somerset Cricket Club in a match that will decide who will finish lowest of the three Somerset teams. Bridge are ninth in the standings with Somerset two points behind in 11th spot but with a better strike rate. A Somerset win would lift them ahead of Bridge, and possibly also Police (10th) who meet Willow Cuts at Royal Naval field.
Cuts are certain of a finish in the top half of the standings and St. David, eighth, will also finish in the top half if they beat PHC as expected.
In tomorrow's other matches, Flatts take on Devonshire Rec. at Devonshire Rec.
field while Rangers are at home to struggling Hamilton Parish.
The two finalists for this year's Knockout Cup will be determined today when the semifinals take place at Wellington Oval and Devonshire Rec. field.
St. David's meet Devonshire at Wellington Oval while favourites St. George's travel to the Rec. to play Southampton Rangers, the team who beat them in the 1990 final.
The semifinals were originally scheduled for last weekend but were rained out.
The final, at White Hill field, has been put back another week to next Saturday. All matches for the remainder of the season start at 11 a.m.
