McGill snatches fourth crown
when she won the Ladies Amateur Match Play Championship at Mid Ocean Club with a resounding eight-and-six victory over close friend Lee Ann Vogel yesterday.
Today the men's tournament will wrap up with local resident Mark Dupuy making a second straight appearance in the 36-hole final, this time against visitor Cy Kilgore.
The 36-hole women's final was all over by the 12th hole of the afternoon round after McGill, winner in 1992, '93 and '95, went five-up over the first 18 holes.
"The course was absolutely perfect, you couldn't have asked for a nicer day,'' said McGill, who plays out of Sunnybrook Golf Club. She knows Vogel from when she (McGill) was living in Connecticut.
"We're best friends from home and it was fun to play each other because we have never played each other in a final of anything,'' said McGill.
"We are still good friends, none of us killed each other.'' Actually the victory was sweet revenge for McGill who lost to Vogel in the 1994 semi-final. Vogel also lost in that year's final, going down to local Pat Morgan on the 37th hole.
"I played well on the first nine when I was one under par but I didn't play that well on the back when I shot four-over, so I ended up with a 74,'' explained McGill who, like Vogel, plays off a one handicap.
"On the second 18 I was two-over on the front (nine) and then we only played three more holes. I love this tournament, it is one of my absolute favourites, just because Bermuda is so great and I love Mid Ocean.'' Vogel admitted things never went right for her.
"It was a combination of not getting it going and I was very erratic and scrambling a lot whereas Lisa was very steady,'' said Vogel. "It seemed like I was working a lot harder out there while she was just having a nice walk in the park. I have no excuses, the weather was great and the course was great.'' The suggestion that maybe she could make it third time lucky next year brought a smile to Vogel's face. "That's a very good theory, I like it a lot,'' said the beaten finalist who hails from New York.
The men's final today promises to be an exciting one with Mark Dupuy having avenged last year's loss to Tim Carr in the final by beating the defending champion two-up in yesterday's quarter-final. Dupuy then went on to beat visitor Rory Scrymgeour two-and-one in the semi-final while Kilgore beat Bill Jenks two-and-one in the morning and then came back in the afternoon to stop Blake Marshall of Bermuda one-up in the semis.
