New York restaurant worker Steven Petgrave, 24, and Audley Lawe, a disc-jockey from Jamaica, were picked up by Police at the Bermuda International Airport on Tuesday evening after arriving on a flight from New York's JFK airport.

After three nights in custody the two men appeared at a special sitting of Magistrates' Court yesterday afternoon to be formally charged before Senior Magistrate Will Francis.

Lawe, 22, who was represented in court by defence attorney Juan Wolffe, is charged with importing 79.9 grams of heroin -- with a street value of more than $388,000, and also of being in possession of the drugs which were intended for supply.

Petgrave, who was unrepresented during yesterday's proceedings, faces similar charges of importing $184,000 of crack cocaine weighing 590 grams which was also intended for supply.

Both men remained calm and emotionless throughout the proceedings, which lasted just a few minutes. They were not required to speak other than to confirm their names.

The pair were remanded in custody for one month and then, handcuffed together, escorted to the rear of the court building by a narcotics officer to a waiting prison van. No application for bail was made.
