Tall ship open to public
gangplanks tomorrow for tours by the general public.
The Ukrainian-registered 110 metre merchant navy training ship has 109 crew members, including more than 70 Ukrainian and German cadets. It will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
It will be berthed at the Cruise Ship Terminal at Ordnance Island, St.
George's.
The Khersones was built 11 years ago in Gdansk, Poland and is a three masted, square and full rigged sailing ship.
The Ukrainian merchant navy also accepts berths on the ship for the public on its cruises.
Bermudian sailor Drew Horsfield will be joining the ship when it leaves on Tuesday for its next destination, The Azores.
Operated by Imaris Perestroika, out of Hamburg, Germany, Khersones like many other ships in next year's Tall Ships 2000 race accepts cruisers on its voyages.
And organisers of Tall Ships 2000 have invited young people to volunteer to join crews in the race next year.
Tall Ships 2000 ports committee member Jacqueline Horsfield said: "This is a marvellous opportunity for young Bermudians to meet youths from around the world.'' She said the trips will be fully sponsored by the race committee and interest is keen for the 100 berths.
"No sailing experience is necessary,'' Mrs. Horsfield said. "It's about being part of a team and meeting people.'' Anyone interested in joining a sail training ship for the race should contact chairman of the ports committee, Brian Billings by mail, at Tall Ships 2000, Suite 405, International Centre, Par-La-Ville, Hamilton.
