Town, Village aim for big finish
Town will make one final attempt to land a piece of silverware this season when they clash in tomorrow's Friendship Trophy final at the National Stadium (4.00 p.m.).
Both teams went into the campaign expected to challenge Vasco for the league crown. But the best they could manage was third (Town) and fifth (Village) place finishes, leaving them with little to celebrate.
Village did manage to reach the final of the Martonmere Cup last November but lost to Boulevard 1-0. They also knocked Dandy Town out of the FA Cup in January, before bowing out themselves to Second Division Hotels.
It was their most humiliating loss of the season and soon after Wendell Baxter resigned as coach, leaving Leroy Wilson to take over.
Village overcame a major obstacle in the Friendship semi-final when they beat Vasco 1-0 and now only Dandy Town stand between them and cup success. The Red Devils recently stopped Town 1-0 in the league and though they hold a slight edge in meetings between the teams this season, tomorrow's match could go either way.
Town have possibly the most feared strike pair in Darron (Duke) Simons and Carlos Smith and they pose the biggest threat to the Village defence which is held together by the solid Irving Romaine in the middle.
It should be an interesting contest between Town's front line and a Village defence that contains the experienced Derek Bell, Michael Hansey and national team goalkeeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams.
Simons is far and away the top striker this season with 23 goals while Smith has eight. Midfielder Reggie Tucker has also chipped in with some important goals in his first season with the club. Village's goalscoring hopes rest with veteran Elliott Jennings and Nakia Smith.
For the first time there will be three finals played with the action beginning at noon with the Commercial Knockout final between Group A champions BAA Wanderers and Devonshire Colts All-Stars.
At 2.00 Prospect will make their third attempt in four years to win the Shield for the first time when they take on Somerset Trojans. After shocking Second Division champions Hotels in the recent semi-finals, Prospect, still bottom of the standings, must be feeling this could be their year.
Last year Paget, then also in last place, stopped first place Devonshire Cougars in the final, and Prospect will be hoping to repeat that feat against the favoured Trojans who will be looking to cap off their return to the First Division by winning the Shield for the first time.
The Shield is the only major trophy in senior football that the Trojans have not won. Then again, in the past the proud west end club have always been too good for the Second Division, until the unthinkable happened on March 31, 1996 when they were relegated for the first time.
While not having things their own way in the Second Division, the Trojans did manage put 12 goals past Prospect without reply in two league meetings this season. They won 4-0 at Police Field last October and then 8-0 in the return match in February as Michael Brangman and Everett Wellman scored five of the goals between them with Brangman getting a hat-trick.
However, after losing to BAA in the 1993 final and Southampton Rangers in the '95 final, Prospect will be hoping for a case of third time lucky.
