Bailey holds off Lewin in tight finish

margins to clinch the KF Trimingham Trophy in an exciting climax to the Etchells class in International Race Week yesterday.

Bailey, runner-up last year, and Lewin finished level on points after the final race in the six-race series, but Bailey was awarded the title because he had recorded a first and second place in the event against Lewin's best of first and third.

Lewin placed third in yesterday's race and Bailey fourth, leaving the former with 263 points, two points adrift of his rival. But after both had discarded their worst finishes, they were tied on 163 points.

Andreas' sister Paula and fellow Bermudian Peter Bromby -- the latter skippering Scott Moore's boat -- had also gone into yesterday's race with a chance of taking the honours, but Lewin finished 15th to put her out of the running, while Bromby's tenth place was enough to put him third overall. John Ulbrich of the US won his first race of the week.

Australian Bill Steele, who endured several reversals of fortune throughout the week, ended the series with a fifth place for ninth overall.

Steele probably spent as much time in discussions with the race jury as he did on the water.

His original boat was sunk after it was hit by an IOD on Tuesday and then he was forced to retire from both of Thursday's races because his replacement had a faulty rudder. His complaint that the second boat couldn't be sailed was taken on board by the jury, who awarded him two eighth places, enabling him to compete yesterday.

In the IOD class, Bruce Dyson, sailing with Bill Widnall, a winner last year, completed a remarkable treble.

Earlier in the week, he had triumphed in the five race Bermuda Race Week Championship and yesterday he clinched the four race Norwegian Series and with it the Vrengen Gold Cup for the winner of the combined series.

Fittingly, Scandinavian Jan Petter Roed took second in the Norwegian Series, also making him runner-up for the Vrengen Gold Cup.

Harry Powell, with former IOD world champion Penny Simmons among his crew, finished third in the combined series.

In the remaining dinghy classes, Don Bedford of the US won the Snipes, while Bermudian Rudy Bailey finished 12 points clear of his nearest rival in the Comets.
