Coach Smith sets example
St. David's 223 Several Cup Match prospects turned in solid performances during St. George's Cup Match trial at Wellington Oval on Saturday.
But it was the batting of ex-Cup Match skipper and now coach Wendell Smith that really inspired the east enders to their triumph over St. David's with a top knock of 74 not out.
Opener Dexter Smith and Ryan Steede also performed well to help George's defeat their neighbours by 52 runs.
Howevever Smith, despite his fine knock in his first match of the season, assured afterwards that nothing should be read into his appearance, as far as playing in Cup Match.
He said he was simply filling in after a player became unavailable.
Nevertheless, Smith was relentless on the bowlers, hammering eight fours and four sixes during his stay at the crease.
Dexter Smith followed with a brisk 54 to strengthen his claim for a return to the mid-summer classic while Mark Ray struck 42, Ryan Steede 37 and Clarkie Trott 24.
Del Hollis was the best bowler for St. David's with three for 52 off nine overs.
For St. David's, Lionel Cann, also a St. George's Cup Match player, topped their batting with an agressive 89, striking six fours and nine sixes, while Clay Smith hit 25, Sammy Robinson 12 and Chris Foggo 12.
Steede snatched three for 38 off seven overs.
Vice President's team 222 President's team 175 Leon Place pushed his claim for a place in the Somerset Cup Match team with a knock of 72 in their inter-club trial match on Saturday.
Place helped Albert Steede's Vice President's side to a 47-run victory over Dexter Basden's team, while Richard Basden was close behind with 67 and Tony Cheeseman on 41.
Jacobi Robinson, a 13-year-old fill-in because the President's XI were short, picked up three wickets in his one over to finish with three for one run.
Dwayne Leverock had two for 36.
In the President's XI, Dwayne Leverock topped the batting with 61 while Wendell White scored 29, Michael Donawa 23 and Dexter Basden 18.
David Gibbs was the pick of the bowlers, taking five for 35 while Tacoma Robinson had two for 36 and Hasan Durham two for 22. Place got the other wicket.
