Holiday race meet attracts bumper entry
Sunday, harness racing officials were yesterday turning their attention to Boxing Day action when the largest purse ever of $5,000 will be up for grabs.
The event is traditionally the biggest of the season with as many as 43 ponies expected to challenge for the bumper cash prizes -- made available by donations from some 30 businesses and individuals added to the general entry fees.
Highlights of the day will be the two, three and four-year-old stake events.
The two-year-olds will include Little Bear, a Bermuda bred colt, owned and driven by Fernando Rego, and Tuxedo's Bow Tie, an Indiana bred colt who came to Bermuda this spring totally green. He is trained and driven by Eddie Roque.
Speedway Jr., owned and driven by Francis DeSilva, and Miss L.L.Dane, the only filly in the field, are from Canada. Dane is owned by the Mello family and David Mello will drive.
Among the three-year-olds, Leslie Wolffe will put Miss Tuffer Road through her paces. Shamrock's Formal Attire will be driven by Roque while Happy Hoe Jr., recently imported from Canada, will be driven by Michael DeCosta.
There are only two entries in the four-year-old stakes. Former two-year-old champion Grand Willy will be driven by Johnnie Five and Just Cruising will be guided by Geno Cooper.
Besides the six stake heats, 18 other races will be run, two of which will be sponsored feature races. The first will see the return of Sandtrap, a veteran stallion who will be coming out of retirement for Leroy Tucker. Also in this race is Claude Boyles' Dark and Stormy, Hang Um High Stables' Bermuda Warrior and Jandie's Giddy Up Go from the Roque stables.
The other feature race is the ninth. On the rail will be Trott Acre Abby Lass; Bobby Degraffe's Gusto's Cracker Jack will be at number two while Championne County with David Lopes in the sulky will start from post position three and on the outside will be Timmy Boyles' Shamrock Temujen.
