Swim pair through to CAC finals

personal best times on the opening day of the 19th Central American and Caribbean Age Group Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico yesterday.

Trevor Nelson and Stephen Fahy were both scheduled to compete in finals late last night, having earlier in the day qualified in heats.

Nelson was the second fastest in the 13-14 age group 100 metres breaststroke, clocking an impressive 1:11.54, a repeat of which was expected to have put him in contention for a medal.

Saltus student Fahy was the eighth fastest qualifier in the 15-17 200 metres butterfly.

Meanwhile, the two youngest members of Bermuda's 10-strong squad, Paul Fox and Nuri Latham, both failed to make it through to the 100 metres 11-12 freestyle final, but did record their best-ever times.

Fox clocked 1:01.40 and Latham 1:04.05 in the morning heats.

Some 330 swimmers from 19 countries are competing at the championships which continue through this week.

Today's second day programme is a busy one for Bermuda with the squad involved in no less than nine events.

In the 13-14 age group, Matthew Hammond and Stephen Troake both compete in the 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke, while Craig Roberts, at 20 the oldest in the team, lines up in the 18-21 200m breaststroke.

Tamika Williams enters the 15-17 100m freestyle while Fahy also tackles that event and Latham competes in the 11-12 100m breaststroke.

Also in action will be Bermuda's four by 100 metres medley relay team of Hammond (backstroke), Nelson (breaststroke), Ronald Cowen (butterfly) and Troake (freestyle).
