Long waiting periods are over

Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown on Friday night in the House of Assembly, announced that starting today no one will have to wait longer than 10 days to sit the driving test.

He said he could not claim direct responsibility for the dramatic turn-around and placed all praise with the civil servants at the Transport Control Department.

Dr. Brown noted: "They just had to be properly stimulated. We will get the best out of our brightest.'' Acknowledgement that parking lots will need to be developed in order for the implementation of fast ferries to really make an impact on traffic congestion, also came from Dr. Brown on Friday night. Dr. Brown in his short statement sought to highlight the difference in approaches between his Government and the previous one.

"The previous Government scheduled ferries and the people had to adjust to fit in.'' he said. "We surveyed the people and asked what time they need the ferries and will be developing a schedule that reflects that.'' Assertions that the airport will be transformed from a "cold and generic place to a warm and friendly place'' also came from Dr. Brown as he told members of the House that the money being put into the project would be "worth the investment.'' Shadow Transport Minister Erwin Adderly noted that the Government could not claim all the kudos for progress being made in the Ministry as he pointed out that the previous Government handed over a good working plan in the Transportation 2000 report.

Mr. Adderly condemned the Government's handling of transport in the throne speech and noted that they could have gone much further. He claimed that transportation is in chaos and charged the Government had not come up with any new policies to address this.

Mr. Adderly also noted that Government should mandate that all taxis have radios and that a central dispatcher should be implemented.
