Town salvage valuable point

In the context of this match at St. David's, visitors Dandy Town might consider the result a point earned rather than two lost as second half headers from Darron Simons and Carlos Smith wiped out Boulevard's two-goal lead.

But either way, their failure to win means that Devonshire Colts keep the First Division top spot they held overnight after beating Vasco.

Yesterday the watching Colts players and their coach Vic Ball left the ground with the biggest smiles, knowing that the result gave them a one-point lead over Town going into next weekend's all-important clash at St.John's Field.

A week ago Boulevard came from two goals down to draw with then leaders Devonshire Colts, who dropped from top spot after Town's victory over Devonshire Cougars the next day.

Yesterday Boulevard again denied one of the leaders maximum points when they built up a two goal lead by the half only to see Town battle back to scramble a share of the spoils.

But three late chances for victory were wasted by Boulevard and Town might count themselves lucky in the end to have snatched a point.

However, after the way they performed in the first half they will likely be happy with a point. Their best chance of scoring came midway through the half when Darron Simons raced through before shooting straight at keeper Mitchell Steede.

Minutes later Devarr Boyles sent Simons through again and a challenge from Donnie Charles brought him down but referee Stuart Crockwell ignored his plea for a penalty, having satisfied himself the tackle was fair.

On the half hour Boulevard went ahead when a good build-up saw Leonard Hypolite send Stevie Wade through on the right. His low cross was met by captain Neil Robinson who drove left-footed past Cymande Davis from close range.

Town fell further behind when in injury time after they were reduced to 10 men as Wayne Rudo received treatment off the field. Dean Boyles' cross from the right was helped on by Warren and Rodney Bascome forced the ball home.

Coach Mark Trott's half-time pep talk worked wonders as just three minutes after the restart Town pulled the first goal back when Simons met a corner on the left by Seyoum Tuzo and headed past Steede at the near post.

Another spectacular finish brought Town back on level terms in the 74th minute, this time when good skills by Simons enabled him to get in a cross from the left and the unmarked Smith calmly placed his header into the top corner.

A draw seemed a fair result then but Boulevard were not finished and only some poor shooting late in the game denied them victory. Bascome's shot from an angle in the box hit the outside of the post in the 79th minute and soon after Warren had the ball in the net in the 84th minute when he lobbed it over the advancing Davis but was in an offside position.

Substitute Kenny Hill went close twice after that while Warren volleyed wide in injury time as Town hung on.
