Island team prepare for Hong Kong charity hike
Far East later this month to help raise money for Asia's disabled and disadvantaged people.
Mr. Michael Spurling, who runs the Island legal firm, Appleby, Spurling and Kempe's Hong Kong office, is the man behind the venture, and has been busy whipping up sponsorship support both in Hong Kong and among his friends and business associates in Bermuda.
He'll be joined on the hike -- expected to take up to 24 hours -- by Mr. Shaun Morris, an assistant attorney in the Hong Kong office, and two company outsiders Mr. Ashley Alder and Mr. Dan Sherman.
Together they have been entered under the name of The Bermuda Bombers. The Maclehose Trailwalk is considered one of the British colony's major annual fund-raising events, having over the years raised thousands of dollars for charity.
It begins on the morning of October 30 from the Sai Kung Country Park and finishes 100 kilometres later in Tuen Mun, taking participants over several difficult climbs and descents, some of which will have to be completed in the dark.
"We have set ourselves a fast target of 20 hours, but since this is our first attempt, we are being a little cautious,'' said Mr. Spurling. "We have been practising for almost two months now and expect to achieve a reasonable time.''
