Bromby tops tough field at US regatta

formidable field of 20 to win the Bedford Pitcher Regatta in Westport, Connecticut yesterday.

Forced out of the final race of the pre-Olympic regatta in Savannah because of a broken pole last week to finish a disappointing eighth after challenging for first, Bromby and crew Lee White were sharp as ever further north in Westport.

Saturday's opening races saw the two Bermudians steer their Star class boat to fourth and first place finishes, then they followed this up on Sunday with another first place finish to claim first overall.

Yesterday's final race was held in a 25 miles per hour breeze with the duo experiencing few problems.

"Everything went quite well, really,'' said Bromby in the competition where the main sponsor was Bermuda-based exempt company, Commercial Risk Reinsurance.

Four Americans followed the Bermudians home. John Safford was second with seven points, Bill Watson third with eight, John MacCausland fourth with nine and Peter Vessella fifth with 16.

The local sailors return home today for three weeks before heading off to the European Championships in Portugal followed by the World Championships in Spain.
