warned again about handling unidentified objects found in local waters.

The six-inch naval shell was found in the Great Sound near Cavelho Bay, Sandys, on Thursday and according to Police Marine Section Inspector Mark Botelho, people should be aware of the dangers of handling weapons and munitions, no matter how old.

"I just ask people who find these things that they not pick them up but report them immediatly to the Police,'' Insp. Bothello added.

He said judging by the amount of coral reef encrustation -- a Brain Coral has attached itself to the shell -- it may have been in the water for more than 50 years.

Since Hurricane Gert churned up local waters two weeks, vintage ordnance has been washing up along Bermuda's beaches. Hundreds of beachgoers last week were cleared from Horseshoe Bay when one shell was detonated there.
