Personal best for Kavin in trying conditions
Marathon Championships yesterday in Brussels, Belgium, and finished 116th overall.
Local favourite Vincent Rousseau and Portugal's Conceicao Ferreira both outsprinted the opposition to win their respective championships.
Rousseau led from the start of the 13-mile race and finished on the cobblestoned, gothic Central Square, in one hour, one minute and five seconds, five seconds ahead of Australia's Steve Moneghetti and eight seconds in front of Britain's Carl Thackery.
Ferreira, the 1990 Pittsburgh Marathon winner, caught Kenya's Tecla Loroupe during the final uphill climb.
Smith ran the course in 1:10:08, just shy of Mike Watson's Bermuda half-marathon record of 1:09:51 he established in 1983. Smith was forced to stop at one point during the marathon because of the cold weather.
Tracy Wright, who competed with a stiff neck, ran the course in 1:16:25 and was 126th overall.
Anna Eatherley -- who was aiming for a personal best time of her own -- finished two minutes outside of that goal with a time of 1:23:31. Eatherley, nevertheless, was satisfied with her performance and was 76th overall among female competitors.
"We did okay, but the course was difficult especially the parts of the road that were cobblestone,'' said Bob Oliver, who accompanied the Bermuda trio as team manager and believed there was a chance for Smith and Wright to run the course in 1:07 or 1:08 prior to the event.
The team returns today.
