Onions take title from Pot

MR Onions took their first Commercial A title in emphatic style on Saturday, beating second-placed Lobster Pot 2-0 on their home turf.

While the showdown at White Hill was far from a classic, the win had all the hallmarks of Onions? form this season ? a frugal defence and an ability to gobble up chances.

While the larger than usual crowd endured a dull first half, MRs stepped up a gear in the second period and got an early goal through a low 20-yard John Lally drive which should not have troubled keeper Brian Ward but was somehow fumbled into the net.

Needing a win to keep their title hopes alive, an over-excited Pot had four players booked and the game was effectively ended as a contest midway through the second half when Pot defender Ben Cooper was sent off after picking up a second yellow in six minutes for a late tackle on Colin Keane.

Ward redeemed himself in the second half with several good saves but Pot never really looked like scoring themselves.

With 15 minutes to go, a long ball found Onions substitute full back Kian Wookey way up front after doing up his shoelaces. He tried to pass to striker Mike Neville but when the ball bounced back off a defender Wookey slammed it home to seal the win.

MR Onions president Chris Fleming, a stalwart of the pub side, said: ?We?re delighted to have won the Commercial League for the first time.

?The club?s been playing as MR Onions for nine years now and for the first two years we avoided relegation on the last day of the season so hopefully we?ve now justified MR owner Phil Talbot?s support ? although he might now be regretting his offer of a free bar if we won the league.

?Saturday?s game was a good example of the reason for our successful season ? we were missing five first-team regulars yet we could still put out a strong squad of 16.

?Our goals were scored by two lads who have started three games between them.?

Lobster Pot striker Dave Allison was generous in defeat after his side got the runners-up spot for the second year running.

He said: ?MRs deserved it. They only lost two games and we lost three times to them, twice in the league and once in the pre-season Goose Gosling tournament ? 2-0 every time.?

The Onions triumph finally breaks Robin Hood?s six-season stranglehold on Commercial A glory.

Hood manager Donny Smyth also praised Onions for their deserved triumph in which they had been the model of consistency.

He said: ?Having won the title for six straight years it was inevitable that the run had to come to an end sometime or another.?

Third-placed North Village were not taking their last game too seriously and went down 8-3 to lowly Valley while nine-man Key West were walloped 11-0 by PHC Raiders. Stephen Trott got a hat-trick and Derek Lowe and Keith Bell got two each while Colin Thompson, Shervin Ming and Neil Clements also notched.

The trapdoors finally opened on Somerset Bridge Peskies and Devonshire Rec. Lions for whom relegation must come as a blessed relief.

Winless Lions lost 1-0 to BAA via a Gary Wilson goal while Robin Hood beat Peskies 7-2. Massimo Tarrotta grabbed three, Brian Fubler got two while Gary Ray and Adam Rusin weighed in. Orantus Turner and Troy Smith replied for Bridge.

Saturday was also a day of reckoning in the B Division with both Dandy Town and St. George?s finally clinching promotion.

However with just one point between them, the Championship is still up for grabs and will go down to the final games on Saturday.

Roots took on a determined Hamilton Parish side ? the majority of whom are set to be involved in the FA Cup Final on April 10. Irving Burgess and Shawn Smith ran tirelessly up front but Roots took control of the game and were 3-0 in front by the half as the Roots topscorer Darron Simons scored twice and Calvin Blankendal scoring the other.

The second half saw Roots score another three as Sean Smith collected a pass on his chest inside the area, turned and then drove the ball past the helpless keeper. Lloyd Christopher then scored at the near post.

Christopher then turned provider as he sent Walter Musson one-on-one with the keeper. As the game wore on, Johnny Bean began to stamp his authority on the match as he made numerous runs through the Roots defence, one time earning a penalty that was missed by Parish. He later crossed to Burgess to score.

Snapping at Roots? heels are St. George?s All-Stars who beat Boulevard 10-1. First-half substitute Lionel Cann got the first while William Richardson scored the other. Cann got another two, taking his season?s tally to 66 while Richardson added one more, Terrence Carlington got two while Herbie Bascome, Jan Cieters and Charles Wade all scored. Cleve Rogers scored Boulevard?s lone goal.

Vasco had kept the promotion race alive with a solid season but will remain in the B Division next year despite a 3-2 win over Pest Control. Vasco twice came from behind after Jamie Matthews scored for short-handed Pest Control after 15 minutes. Paul Frias equalised but a Troy Crockwell screamer from the byline put Pest control in front again in the second-half until Joe Cunha and Michael Bean secured Vasco?s win.

An 11-goal thriller at Malabar saw Prison Officers grab the lead in the dying moments to take a 6-5 victory over local rivals Dockyard Falcons.

Falcons dominated the early play, Joe Pacheco becoming the first to get on to the scoresheet with a lofted shot, Garry Toy then buried a header and Dwayne de Rosa rifled in a right-footer soon after. Prison Officers hit back but DeRosa scored his second to make it 4-1 at the break.

Prison Officers were the first to score in the second half and then scored three penalties, all conceded by Sheldon Bradshaw who was in turn fouled at the other end and buried the penalty himself to make it 5-5.

With two minutes to go, a quickly (and poorly) taken free kick saw the Falcons give the ball to Prison Officers in midfield who scored just before the whistle blew.

Prospect chalked up a 7-3 win over bottom-placed Wolves with four goals from Dean Martin, two from Trace Easton and one from Tracey Adams.

Devonshire All-Stars pick up a 3-0 walkover win after some of the Somerset Extros side were unable to leave the West End because of a road block.
