Although the numbers were considerably lower than expected, Bermuda's first Goalkeeper's Academy got underway at National Stadium on Wednesday under the watchful eyes of two veterans -- Bermuda national team goalkeeper's coach Gwynne Williams and former professional Granville (Sam) Nusum.

Despite the modest turnout, Williams said that he was hopeful that the number would increase over the next two weeks. Just five goalkeepers showed up for this first session.

The course is designed for senior goalkeepers for the first eight weeks and afterwards goalkeepers from the Second Division and the under-19s and under-16s will become involved with Williams and Nusum being assisted by the senior goalkeepers.

"We were somewhat disappointed with the numbers that showed up on Wednesday, but a few clubs did contact us earlier to advise that their players would be unavailable for the opening evening. So we can anticipate an increase in numbers next week,'' said Williams.

Williams said it was important to give goalkeepers an opportunity to get personalised coaching in a structured programme.

Further sessions will be held at National Stadium on each Wednesday evening until the end of September and then move to the little soccer ground at Prospect, adjacent to the police station.
