The East squad took a 26-22 lead at the half but in the second half the West increased the pace and tied it 48-48 after regulation time thanks to the outside shooting of Torray Gibbons and Keith Caines. In the overtime period, the West were unable to convert from the outside while the East controlled the boards and converted open shots.
Jason Farrington of the Lakers, led the East with 17 points and was named most valuable player. Top scorer for the West was Malik Blyden of the Sonics with 15 points.
CRICKET CRI Dr. Ali Bacher's first appointment as new chairman of the ICC Development Committee will bring him to Bermuda early next month.
Bacher, who was instrumental in having South Africa accepted back into the cricket fold after years of isolation, was elected to the new post two weeks ago during the ICC's meetings in London.
Bacher's job includes overseeing the development of the smaller cricketing countries, particularly the non-Test playing countries.
While here in Bermuda between August 5-8, Bacher, who is also the chief executive of the United South African Cricket Board, will visit clubs and grounds, meet with Sports minister Tim Smith and Bermuda Cricket Board of Control officials as well as local media.
The fifth annual mini-Cup Match, for children in summer day will be held today at Devonshire Rec. Insufficient buses to transport the several hundred children from the nine camps forced the organisers to switch the date of the event. The match will be 25 overs per side and will start at 10 a.m. Somerset have won each of the five matches so far, including a win by 135 runs last year.
SWIMMING SW The fifth race of the Open Water Swim Series will take place in Harrington Sound tomorrow. Forty swimmers will swim the two miles starting at 4 p.m. at Harrington Sound public dock. The previous four races have seen more than 40 competitors entered. Entry fee is $2.
Mike Cash and Sarah Mancell are currently leading the series with the most points overall. The recently completed three-race junior series was won by Ronald Cowen, narrowly edging out Michael Hanson on total points over the series. The start and finish of the race will be at the public dock, with the swimmers doing two loops of a one-mile course.
