Derby clash a matter of pride
A cross town rivalry pitting the men from around `The Curve' and Parsons Road against the Palmetto Road boys.
Boulevard against Devonshire Cougars (Devonshire Rec., 8 p.m.). Throw the form books out the window, this is a match-up of heart, pride, attitude...in short a turf war.
In that regard the game could be an ideal tune-up for those later looking to take in the boxing match between James Toney and Roy Jones dubbed `The Uncivil War'.
Tonight's First Division soccer clash is of utmost importance to both sides.
And even if the level of soccer fails to impress, the match at least promises to provide colour, with the trademark red, gold and green of Boulevard combining with Devonshire's yellow and green.
For Cougars it is a chance to gain much needed points and respect, after starting the season with a draw and four losses as they occupy the division's cellar.
Included was a loss to BAA, which cost Brian (Bulla) Anderson the head coaching job. He was forced to resign immediately following the defeat.
Meanwhile, Boulevard will be looking to improve on their current position in seventh place and at the same time improve their goal difference against the league's second worst defence -- 10 goals against.
Still, they will likely have to do without the services of Dwight (Payback) Warren and Albert Caisey due to religious reasons -- both are Seventh Day Adventists and thus are prevented from performing on Friday nights.
Warren's loss would appear the more severe, as he remains the sparkplug in the Blazers' line-up.
Skipper Neil (Diamond) Robinson has shown that he can carry the load and will likely have to do so from his roaming midfield role.
Lately goals, or rather the prevention of them, have been a concern -- witness a similar 10 goals against. It's a problem which centre-back Leroy Stevens and partner Donnie Charles will have to rectify. They get a chance to do so against a Cougars team which has scored a meagre total of three goals all season.
