New speedboat to offer round-the-Island tours
Bermuda's newest water tour boat will be sailing into Hamilton Harbour on Monday morning to offer high-speed tours by the end of the week.
The new bright yellow Wildcat can seat 54 and do 50 knots. Its tours will take visitors on a whirlwind tour right around the Island in just over two hours.
Edward Lawrence and his brother William will be motoring the boat through high seas from New York, leaving Sunday and sailing through the night to arrive in Bermuda 36 hours later.
The business has been set up by the Lawrence brothers and their parents Bill and Elda.
"It is a very, very stable ride,'' said Edward Lawrence from Philadelphia where last minute adjustments were being made to the boat before setting sail.
"It is perfectly suited for Bermuda's weather, which can change many times in the same day. It has a very shallow keel, which means that it will not damage the reefs.'' The Lawrence brothers thought up the idea behind the business four years ago and have spent the last three finding the right kind of boat.
The rides will leave from Flag Pole and do non-stop tours of the Island twice a day.
The seats are $50 a head per adult and $26.50 for children -- meaning each trip could potentially net a maximum of $2,700 a trip. Mr. Lawrence would not be drawn on the cost of the specially made ship, but conceded it had cost less than $1 million.
By late next week the boat should be fully operational.
