Fahy earns spot in US Nationals

Two months after qualifying for the Commonwealth Games in three events, Fahy has qualified for the US Nationals next month following a strong performance this past weekend at the Big Eastern Inter-Collegiate meet.

Fahy, a sophomore at Yale University, had a third place finish in the 200-yard individual medley and a victory in the 100-yard butterfly consolation final at the short-course meet attended by all Ivy League schools, as well as the US Army and Navy teams.

Fahy is the first Bermudian since Geri Mewett in 1992 to qualify for the US Nationals, although Mewett, who attended the University of Tennessee, did not attend the meet.

It was uncertain yesterday if Fahy would go either, after already missing a chunk of classroom time to attend the World Championships in January. The US Spring Nationals are April 4-5 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Assistant national coach Richard Goodwin is one who thinks Fahy should attend.

"This would put him up against some of the really big guys,'' he said. "It would be a tremendous experience for him.'' Missing the school record by just five one hundredths of a second, Fahy clocked a time of one minute, 50.88 seconds in the the 200 individual medley.

He also swam 49.76 in the 100 butterfly -- missing the school mark by three tenths of a second.

Fahy also swam in the 4x50 butterfly relay, 4x50 freestyle relay as well as the 'fly leg in the 4x100 medley.
