Island's All-Stars on show
showcase their talent today and tomorrow when Bermuda Cricket Board of Control stage their annual youth all-star matches.
The Shell Under-13 match between the East and West All-Stars will be a 30-overs clash played at Devonshire Rec. today, starting at 3.00 p.m. while the BF&M Under-17 50-overs game between the East and West takes place tomorrow at Sea Breeze Oval, starting at 11.00 a.m.
All of the youngsters chosen to represent the squads have been involved in the Board's youth programme during the summer and are seen as good prospects for gaining international status in the future.
Randy Horton, chairman of the Board's youth development committee, said that this was the second straight year that the two matches had been organised and noted that it was a clear indication of the BCBC's intention to establish a sound development programme for the youngsters in their drive to revitalise the sport.
"We are all excited about what is happening on the youth scene here in the Island. When the new board took over last year they made it known that the priority was to work with the youth and provide them with the many opportunities that existed in cricket,'' said Horton, noting the Board were grateful to BF&M and Shell for their support as sponsors.
"When matches like the ones we have for these all-stars come up combined with the forthcoming visit by Canada's Under-17 national team we are so excited.
"We only hope that the public shows a similar enthusiastic response by coming out and giving the boys their support.'' The majority of the players representing the Under-17 squads will see action against Canada during their tour of the Island from August 12-19.
For the all-star clashes, Wendell Smith and Corey Hill are the coaches of the East Under-13s while Arnold Manders and Quinton King are in charge of the West. The East Under-17s are coached by Courtney Trott and George Cannonier while the West are coached by Steven Bremar and Quinton King.
