typical example of what Arthur Pitman's batting meant to his team.

He so dominated the match that his innings of 81 gave BAA victory by 77.

Had he made a `duck', the New Yorkers would have won by three! So completely (apart from Arthur) did the bowlers dominate the contest that the combined efforts of all the other 19 batsmen added up to a mere 78 runs -- or an average of four each! Arthur came in at 13-for-2. He always batted at number four, even in his schooldays, and demolished many a good start by the opposition. On this occasion he received all the support he needed from Jack Hayward, a batsman with a rock solid defence. They put on 54 for the fourth wicket.
