The public will soon get a first hand look at the tent-cottages planned for Daniel's Head.

A prototype structure has arrived on the Island and will be erected on the former Canadian Naval base in Sandys Parish early this month.

Most of the 96 tent-cottages will be located on the raised "head'' section of the land, surrounded by water and overlooking Daniel's Head Island. Some will extend out over the water.

They will feature a queen-size bed, sitting room, bathroom and verandah -- and a few will incorporate a glass viewing platform in the floor of the cabin.

Meanwhile, the removal of asbestos from the roof and floors of a building on the site has delayed work slightly.

Workman discovered more of the deadly material than previously thought and are waiting on permission from owners Destination Villages before removing it.

The delay is only expected to last a few days.

The public will still be given access to the beach and specially-conducted tours will allow them to see the developments on the land, which was restricted.

General manager Richard Quinn said whereas the beach would be open to the public, they would want the community to respect the privacy of the guests by not wandering on to the restricted area.

There will also be the opportunity for locals to take part in activities organised at Daniel's Head Village, including water sports operated there.

The "head'' and administration buildings have always been restricted areas, and it was only when the Canadian force pulled out in 1994 that the beaches were opened up.

"People are still allowed to use the beaches. We want to be part of the community,'' said Mr. Quinn. "The last thing we want to create is any animosity.'' Taking shape: Contractors have started to dig foundations for the tented-cottages at the new Daniel's Head Village eco-resort. Digging footings for one of the cabins are driver David Kerry and worker Carlos Carreiro.
