Kiefer signs up for Open
The clay courts at the Coral Beach and Tennis Club will host the event for the 14th time, from April 14 to 22.
Kiefer is a former world number four and has been one of the most consistent performer on the ATP Tour over the past decade, having finished in the top 50 for eight of the last ten years.
Last year, he reached the Australian Open semi-finals, where he lost to world number one Roger Federer, and in 2005 he was the only player to take a set off Federer at Wimbledon.
He has won over $6 million in prize money and boasts wins over such players as Pete Sampras and Federer. This will be Kiefer’s second trip to the XL Bermuda Open — he was the No.3 seed at the 2003 Open and lost in the second round.
Experts are tipping big things for 19-year-old Californian Querrey. After beating the 6ft 6in youngster in San Jose this year, Andy Roddick predicted that Querrey could become a top 30 player by the end of this year.
Querrey has already managed wins over former top 20 players Tommy Haas and Vince Spadea and managed to take the opening set from world No.2 Rafael Nadal in the ATP Masters Series event in Cincinnati last year.
Veteran player Paul Goldstein said of Querrey: “Sam’s early success has been incredibly impressive. In less than a year on tour, he has established himself in the top 100 and as one who will have great success on tour many years to come.
“As gifted a player as he is, he is a better guy. Without exception, every veteran American player is rooting for this kid.”
