Trott's heroics not enough as Bermuda suffer heavy defeat
Ireland 236
Bermuda 167
Rodney Trott's fine all-round performance counted for little at the Under-19 World Cup at the Johor Cricket Academy in Malaysia yesterday as Bermuda slumped to a 69-run defeat against Ireland.
Bermuda had beaten the same team earlier in the tournament by 20 runs to record their only win.
Trott claimed four wickets with his off-break spin and then hammered 53 off 73 deliveries before the Islanders eventually folded in the 49th over.
It was the Bermuda skipper's second half-century of the tournament.
Malachi Jones was next high man with a swashbuckling 49 scored off 40 balls while tailender Tre Govia hit an unbeaten ten.
Bermuda began the match without the promising yet temperamental Chris Douglas at the top of the order and it showed as the Islanders quickly found themselves in a spot of bother at 57 for three.
Douglas has been sent home early for disciplinary reasons.
A 65-run, fourth-wicket partnership between Trott and Jones in nine overs put Bermuda back in control before Ireland leg spinner and skipper Greg Thompson struck a telling blow by removing the pair in the space of seven runs.
Having made the big breakthrough, Thompson proceeded to shred Bermuda's lower order with little resistance as the Islanders' last five wickets tumbled for the addition of just 28 runs.
Thompson finished with superb figures of five for 26 while fast bowler Andrew Britton took two for 21.
Earlier, right- handers Paul Stirling (59) and James Hall (75) shared in a 137-run third-wicket partnership that gave Ireland the edge after they had slipped to 47 for two in the 12th over.
Trott was the pick of the Bermuda bowling, claiming four for 37 while leg spinner Govia returned two for 37 off seven overs.
