Schools take part in first Relay Classic

The Island's best student athletes are set to compete in the inaugural Bermuda Pacers Track Club's Schools' Relay Classic later today.

More than 300 youngsters from around 25 schools are expected to descend on the National Sports Centre to battle it out for pride as well as prize money, which will be awarded to the winning schools.

Sanctioned by Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA), the relay event will feature athletes from primary, middle and secondary schools and a demonstration from Canadian Para Olympian Curtis Thom. Athletes from the Adaptive Sports Programme at WindReach Recreational Village will also be in attendance.

Cal Simons, Pacers coach and race coordinator, said the idea behind the Relay Classic was to instil pride and create energy in school athletics.

"We hope to make this an annual meet and it will give club coaches a chance see athletes who have not yet fallen under their radar."

The event starts at 5 p.m.
