Bermuda Under-19s were brushed aside by World Cup challengers England who romped to a 10-wicket victory at the Royal Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Opener Chris Douglas was the only batsman to reach double figures, striking three fours, as England skittled the Islanders out for 55 runs off just 28.1 overs.

Chasing such a low total was never going to pose England's front-line batsmen much of a problem and they completed the emphatic victory without losing a wicket in 10.4 overs.

Struggling to combat the turning ball seems to be a common problem for Bermuda's batsmen with slow left arm spinner Liam Dawson scooping the man-of-the-match award with figures of three for 15.

Bermuda coach Arnold Manders admitted team morale was on the wane after their second successive thumping, but stressed it was important to remember Bermuda were facing the best young talent in the world.

"We've been telling the boys to keep their heads up because it is not over and we can still make the Plate Finals and reach the objectives we set before we left Bermuda," said Manders.

"We trained six hours a week, whereas these teams have been training six hours a day for the past six months.

"Our boys still attend school opposed to our opposition who do nothing but play the game. The guys were over-awed by the players they're facing, but they're putting up a good fight.

"Terry Fray was hit on the head from a bouncer against Bangladesh, but when we got out to the middle he was smiling and was ok. People have to remember that some of these guys bowl well over 80 mph and even into the 90s.

"In a few years' time some of these guys will be pushing for spots on their respective Test and ODI teams."

Bermuda now have a rest day before their crunch clash against Ireland tomorrow. The victors will secure third place in Group D and a likely match against fourth-placed Group A side Papua New Guinea.

Should Manders' men slump to another loss they would then have the onerous task of locking horns with heavyweights West Indies or South Africa.

"We have a rest day before our match against Ireland so we'll sit down and talk about what we need to do to pull off a victory," said Manders.

"But it is a very important match as the third-place team in our group will play the fourth-place team in Group A, which as of now is Papua New Guinea. If we finish fourth, it is either West Indies or South Africa, so we want to get third and look forward to the challenge."

Bermuda lost their opening game of the tournament by 178 runs against Bangladesh on Monday.
