Bangladesh too strong for Island's Under-19s
Bangladesh 260
Bermuda 82
Bermuda's Under-19 World Cup debut ended in a crushing defeat at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia yesterday, with the Islanders going down by 178 runs in their opening Group D clash against former ICC Associate rivals Bangladesh.
Bermuda's attack, missing key seamer Stefan Kelly, failed to contain the Bangladesh batsmen who rattled up a huge total of 260 in their allotted overs for the lost of eight wickets.
In reply, Bermuda lost their last seven batsmen for the addition of 32 runs before they were eventually dismissed well short of the target.
Bermuda made early inroads with the ball after inserting their Asian opponents in to bat before a 62-run second-wicket stand put Bangladesh in control.
Bermuda, though, clawed their way back into contention when Bangladesh's middle order stuttered, losing three quick wickets for the addition of 30 runs.
But a vital 99-run, sixth-wicket stand powered Bangladesh past the double-century mark and well on course for posting a total beyond Bermuda's reach.
Bermuda vice-captain Malachi Jones, led his team's wayward bowling attack that conceded 25 wides by claiming two for 64.
Asked to score at just over five runs per over, Bermuda came undone at the crease, with only skipper Rodney Trott and middle order bat Jordan DeSilva managing to get into double figures.
Trott hit 20 off 37 deliveries and Jordan 11 off 25. High score was 32 in extras.
Trott also shared in his team's highest partnership, 34 runs for the third wicket along with opener Chris Douglas (eight).
Douglas and Terryn Fray (one) added 16 for the first wicket before the latter was trapped plumb lbw in front of the stumps.
Bermuda take on England today, hopeful of better a result if they are to progress beyond the group phase of the tournament.
Test nation Pakistan are the two-time defending Under-19 World Cup champions.
Before yesterday's match Premier Ewart Brown sent the team the following message: "We want you to know that your countrymen are behind you as you enter the World Cup competition. We expect you to do your best and make your opponents earn every run.
"Work hard. Be proud. Stand tall."
