Women restrict opponents but exit qualifiers without a win
@$:[AT]bylinerg:By Colin Thompson[AT]bodyindent:Papua New Guinea 119Bermuda 74Wayward bowling and another dismal batting display condemned Bermuda's women's national team to defeat in their final World Cup qualifier against Papua New Guinea in South Africa yesterday.Bermuda tossed down 38 extras, 32 of which were wides, before coming unstuck at the crease to give Papua New Guinea victory by 45 runs.Had they not been as generous in the field, Allan Douglas' team could have pulled off what a week ago might have seemed impossible following a ten-wicket battering against hosts South Africa in their first match which saw them score a meagre 13 runs.To their credit, however, Bermuda completed the tournament with a semblance of respectability as they pushed New Guinea all the way in a low-scoring match, with all-rounder Terry-Lynn-Paynter bagging man-of-the-match honours.Papua New Guinea won the toss and elected to bat. But Bermuda, led by the seam of Paynter, restricted their opponents to a modest total.Paynter, the sister of fiery fast bowler George O'Brien jr, claimed four for 16 off nine overs, including two maidens. And the policewoman had good support from Ruena Richardson who took two for 33.In reply, however, Bermuda again came up short with only top order bats Paynter and skipper Linda Mienzer managing double figures.Paynter thumped 32 and Mienzer 15 in a second-wicket stand worth 45 that put Bermuda back on course after opener Charlene Thompson went without bothering the scorers. But once the pair were removed Bermuda folded like the proverbial deck of cards, losing their last seven wickets for the addition of 24 runs. There were 17 extras.Bermuda depart South Africa today.
